John Steinberg

It’s our pleasure to welcome back author, playwright and Circle Sq. member, John Steinberg, to launch his latest novel, Three Days in Vienna, a sequel to the successful Blue Skies Over Berlin.

Following the story of Charlotte, a young German woman, who thought she could escape her memories of wartime Berlin, moves to London in 1954 under an assumed name. It takes an unlikely friendship with Lillian, a former child of the Kindertransport, to come to terms with her past. Fast forward to the year 2000 and the spotlight is on Lillian’s daughter, Elizabeth.  An impromptu visit to Vienna to trace WW2 survivors of her maternal family throws up more than Elizabeth bargained for, when she finds herself romantically involved with an Israeli Secret Service Agent whom she has turned to for help.

She then witnesses a life-threatening terrorist attack at the home of one of the county’s most prominent citizens, to whom she’s discovers she’s related.

Intent on putting the experience behind her, Elizabeth returns to London only to be confronted with a domestic crisis of her own, when her lawyer husband, Anthony, is unexpectedly struck off for an apparent serious misdemeanour and is left facing financial ruin.

She is also unaware that Anthony has been caught up in a conspiracy, involving his father’s ultra-right political party and its main sponsor, a world-renowned pharmaceuticals company with dubious roots to Nazi Germany.

Things are eventually resolved when the two apparently unconnected episodes come together, to provide belated justice for the victims of the holocaust and for Anthony, who gets reinstated.

Now her family appears to be back on an even keel, it only proves a temporary respite since the last years’ experience has left Elizabeth with as many unanswered questions about her identity and what she truly wants out of life.
