“Winning the Losers’ Game: Using Machine Learning & Big Data to Optimise Investment Returns” with Patrick Armstrong, CIO, Plurimi
Active management is, in aggregate, a loser’s game and this can be proven mathematically. The market is the sum of all investors and is split between both active and passive investors. Passive investors own a pro-rata percentage of the stocks that constitute the market, and the remainder is made up of active investors.
To justify an active approach, investment managers must have either an information advantage and/or the ability to process information more effectively than their competitors. Regulatory changes have to a large extent chipped away at these advantages, levelling the playing field for investors.
‘Big data’ and machine learning have a significant role to play in drastically improving the quality and speed of data analysis and interpretation. Plurimi’s view is that by harnessing the power of machine learning, combined with human insight, information can be analysed more swiftly, robustly and objectively than the competition, therefore driving excess returns.
We’ll hear from Plurimi’s CIO on their data-driven approach to investing. This session will provide an overview of their approach and the power of AI in creating portfolios that outperform the market.
