Lunchtime Lecture: ‘THE MAKING OF CITYWIRE’ with Lawrence Lever

Lawrence Lever, Executive Chairman and founder of financial information group Citywire, will share his experiences of setting up Citywire, from raising funding from the mighty Reuters to creating a new kind of business model. With insights into how they created their fund manager database, how they serve their readers and the impact of coronavirus, Lawrence’s candid talk sheds light on what he believes really matters in business.

Starting in 1999 as a website for UK private investors, Citywire has expanded to 243 employees and offices in London, New York, Milan, Munich and Singapore. Citywire publishes websites, magazines, unique data on individual fund manager performance and hosts events in over 20 countries. Citywire aims to help people make better investments by identifying, ranking and rating individual fund managers – and highlighting what they invest in. Citywire tracks over 16,000 fund managers – the people not the funds. While almost all its activities are aimed at professional investors it has two websites for private investors: Funds Insider and Investment Trust Insider.

Before Citywire, Lawrence founded a TV production company making financial documentaries, co-founded a newsletter on Investment Trusts, wrote a book on a UK financial scandal called Barlow Clowes (published by Macmillan and Coronet), was Financial Editor of the Mail on Sunday and previously Associate City Editor for the Times. He was supposed to have had a career as a lawyer, having qualified as a solicitor in 1983 but gave it up for journalism. He was educated at Brasenose College Oxford and Manchester Grammar School.

Lawrence is married to Karen, a child psychotherapist. Together they have three adult children and live in Belsize Park, North West London.
