The Wonder Of Wine.
Circle Sq. and Hedonism Wines collaborated once again to create an evening that was filled with tasting exquisite wines, hearing from leading winemakers, breaking very special bread and sharing stories with members and friends. As well Chêne Bleu wines, members were offered a welcome glass of delicious, and well-priced Collard-Picard Champagne, and at the end of the evening, a Willi Opitz Gewutzraminer, and a rich and fruity wood-aged Taylor’s Vintage Port. As always, there was a selection of cheeses and crudités, accompanied by exquisite bread from Hedonism’s sister restaurant, Hide. To appreciate just how good it was, you would have had to have been there…
Chêne Bleu, the vineyard that Nicole and Xavier Rolet have lovingly restored and shared with the world, is situated in a unique spot in the shadows of Mont Ventoux in Provence. The altitude, the soil and almost all year-round sunshine, result in perfectly ripened fruit that has just enough exposure to nature to produce wines that are full bodied, delicate and exceptionally palette-pleasing. What more could you want?
Well there is more, so much more.
The highlight of the evening was hearing from Nicole Rolet, winemaker, entrepreneur and passionate host: about the land where they have created their vineyard; about the challenges and real joy of bringing back the vines; about building a 21st century winery; and about producing wines that are excellent and appealing. After all, this is a business too.
Nicole was joined by her husband Xavier, who, as well as being a partner in creating the wine, is a beekeeper. He has been tending to the hives on the property for almost 20 years and talked passionately about the importance of bees, not only in Provence, but to everyone wherever we are.
As well as tasting the elegant Chêne Bleu 2016 Viogner and the magnificent 2010 Abélard and 2011 Heloise, there was much to learn – about what it takes to make great wine, the joy of a unique location, nature’s gifts, new skills and finding the right partners.
Wine is a wonder, and wonderful.
